The surrender of Burgoyne’s army was one of the most decisive victories in American and world history. It marked a turning point in the Revolutionary War, and even today ranks among the most important military engagements ever fought. Grateful Americans erected the Saratoga Battle Monument in 1877 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Patriot triumph at Saratoga.

"I make no doubt you have heard of the victory over that haughty General Burgoyne whose aim and intent was to plunder, destroy, oppress the innocent inhabitants of our land. He came as a roaring lion, but thanks to heaven his designs were frustrated and his schemes brought to nothing and contrary to his expectations heaven granted victory [to] our side."
